Visit Stramberk – the Idyllic Town in the Czech Republic

Stramberk is one of the most charming places you can visit in the Czech Republic. Located just a short train ride from Ostrava and not too far from the border with Poland and Slovakia, this is one of those lovely towns where spending time is a pure pleasure. With a history dating back to medieval times, a well-preserved historic center, and a picturesque location, there are so many great things to do in Stramberk, perfect for spending at least one day there. 

Stramberk has been on my radar for years, but I finally made it there only recently, and I was enchanted right away. I arrived in the early-ish morning (around 9 am), when the town was only slowly waking up. That’s when I enjoyed Stramberk the most, wandering its empty streets and winding lanes, and admiring its beautiful architecture (mostly pastel-colored buildings and wooden houses).

But even with people around, Stramberk didn’t feel overwhelming or rushed. No one was in a hurry; locals and visitors seemed to soak in the slow pace of the place. This, together with the picturesque town and its surroundings, made me enjoy Stramberk so much.

If you plan a trip to the eastern part of the Czech Republic, be sure to include Stramberk in your itinerary; you will not be disappointed. Here’s your guide to visiting Stramberk, Czech Republic.

How to get to Stramberk

Stramberk is located only around 40 km south of Ostrava (the third-largest city in the Czech Republic). Both places are well-connected by trains – there are direct trains more or less every hour, departing from Ostrava-Svinov station. The travel time from Ostrava to Stramberk is around one hour. You can check the connections and purchase the ticket on the Czech Railways website here.

If you travel around by car, there are a few parking spaces in the center of the town, which makes it easy to start your Stramberk sightseeing. 

How to get around Stramberk

From the train station, it’s a pleasant 20-minute walk to the historical center. Along the way, you can already get a foretaste of what the architecture of the town looks like. Once in the center, all the Stramberk attractions are within walking distance of each other. 

Where to stay in Stramberk

I visited Stramberk on a day trip from Ostrava but, to be honest, I wouldn’t mind spending a little bit more time there and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the town. If you decide to stay overnight in Stramberk, there are a few good accommodation options to choose from:

What to see in Stramberk

The symbol of Stramberk is Truba – the cylinder-shaped tower built on the hill above the town. It’s the most important remnant of the 13-th century Strallenberg Castle that used to stand in this place, guarding the town below. The tower was turned into a viewing platform already in the early 20th century (1901-1903), and it serves this purpose still today.

The tower is 40 meters high, and for a small fee, you can go to the top to admire Stramberk and its surroundings. It’s a bit over a hundred stairs to reach the viewing platform, but the panorama you get is definitely worth it.

You can see the town with its historical center and urban planning, as well as picturesque hills and Beskid Mountains surrounding Stramberk. On the way to the top, you can also look at old pictures of Truba, also from before the renovations.

While you are next to the Truba tower, you can also take a look at two mountain huts that were built here in the early 20th century. There are also remnants of the old walls surrounding Truba. 

From Truba, it’s a short walk to the main square of the historical town (simply named “Namesti” – “the square”). It’s such a lovely, green place, with a slightly sloping surface, where you can find some of the most beautiful buildings in Stramberk.

There are Baroque townhouses, the Baroque John of Nepomuk Church (built in 1721-1723, definitely worth visiting), as well as the 19th-century fountain. The square is also a perfect place to relax in one of the cafes or restaurants; there’s even a small local brewery – Městský pivovar Štramberk (located on the opposite side of the square from the church). 

In many places you can find the so-called “Stramberk ears” (Štramberské uši) – a local delicacy in the shape of ears and with the spicy, gingerbread flavor. The legend says that it’s been made in Stramberk since 1241 and, since the name is protected, you can find it only in this town. One of the best places where you can try Stramberk ears and see how they are made is Pekárna U Káči, located at the main square, near the church. 

One of my favorite things to do in Stramberk was wandering around the town and surrounding hills, not only to find more viewpoints of this picturesque place, but also to find beautiful wooden houses. And there are so many of them in Stramberk, around a hundred! The Wallachian log cabins date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. You can find the most beautiful ones at Jaroňkova, Dolní Bašta, and Horní Bašta streets.

One last thing you can’t miss when visiting Stramberk is the Sipka Cave. It is located a bit further from the historical center (but still within walking distance), and it’s definitely worth the detour, not only for yet another beautiful view of Stramberk.

This is where the Neanderthal child’s bones were found in the late 19th century, as well as numerous fossilized animal bones. The cave is around 50 meters long and is open to the public 24/7.

While Sipka Cave is a really beautiful natural spot in Stramberk, you can also hike a bit around the hill it is located on, as there are a few other interesting attractions around: viewpoints, monuments, rock formations, and more.

Where to go next

Tourists often overlook this part of the Czech Republic (and Central Europe), but there are so many great places you can visit here. Not far from Stramberk, you can visit charming historical towns like Opava, Novy Jicin, or Cesky Tesin (part of the town is in Poland), vibrant Ostrava, or beautiful Beskid Mountains. A bit further away, you can find UNESCO-listed Olomouc and Kromeriz; there are also numerous interesting places in Poland and Slovakia. There are so many amazing destinations in this region waiting for you to discover them.
