Ljubljana pictures that will inspire you to visit the lovely capital of Slovenia

(Last Updated On: 02/12/2019)

I have vague memories from my first trip to Ljubljana, back in 2002. I was on my way to ski flying competitions in Slovenian Alps and it seemed like the most reasonable idea to stop in the capital, to have a better image of the country.

My first visit to Ljubljana, Slovenia

I might not remember all that much but I was certain that Ljubljana is the most charming and the cutest capital city of Europe. Bohemian, somehow edgy and insanely pretty, with a spectacular view towards Alps. All the Ljubljana pictures I’ve seen before weren’t photoshopped, the city really was that pretty!

Ljubljana didn’t feel like the capital city, more like a small town that is perfect to relax and enjoy the Central European vibe. It’s a great introduction to the country when you visit Slovenia.

Returning to Ljubljana

Ljubljana made such a good impression on me that I’ve returned there three more times during my backpacking Europe trips, just for few hours because it was nearby or as a perfect base to explore more of Slovenia. I visited it recently one more time as I couldn’t imagine not including it in my Slovenian itinerary, and I fell for it all over again.

It’s incredible how much the city has changed over these years, how popular it became. I’m not all that much surprised, to be honest, it’s such a gem it had to be discovered at some point!

I was lucky my accommodation, Hostel Tresor, was located just steps away from the main square and the heart of the city – Presernov trg. It was a perfect base to explore Ljubljana on foot as it is just made for walking around.

The cobbled streets, the beautiful architecture, numerous cafes full of locals and the colorful vegetables market – it’s so hard not to fall in love with the city! On top of that, there’s the castle with breathtaking views over the Old Town and the nearby Alps! Ljubljana is just the prettiest!

Ljubljana from a different perspective

This time I also was lucky to see the city from a different perspective – thanks to Ljubljana Card I took a boat trip on the Ljubljanica river.

It was pretty incredible as not only I could admire the beautiful architecture of the Old Town but also some random parts of the city where people were fishing and teenagers took part in kayaking competitions. With the sunny weather, it looked so idyllic!

Travel resources

With over 15 years of independent traveling, I’ve learned which websites and services are the best when planning a trip. I always use and trust the following websites:

Money – My number one tip for everyone is to start using Revolut bank card to save money when traveling.

You get the card by mail within a few days and you can use it all over the world. You top up the card in the app on the phone, where you can also have accounts in different currencies and exchange money between them, for no extra fee and at very favorable rates.

Everything is super easy and fast, you only need an internet connection to manage your accounts in the app.

Revolut supports over 140 currencies and offers free withdrawal from ATMs all over the world. In the first 6 months I’ve used Revolut card in 12 countries, including Slovenia, in 3 continents and had no issues at all. And I saved a lot of money in the exchange rates!

Click here to learn more about the service and order your own Revolut card!

Accommodation – I always book my accommodation through Booking.com.

They have really good deals (especially with their “Genius” program that you become a member of after few reservations) and in most of the cases, if your plans change, you can cancel the reservation without any extra costs.

I also value them for a really good customer service that I had to use a few times.

Check the best deals on accommodation in Ljubljana here!

Insurance – I never travel without the insurance as you never know what might happen on the road and better safe than sorry (I’ve learnt my lesson).

I can recommend World Nomads that offer the insurance dedicated to travelers just like you and me.

Click here to get the insurance policy for Slovenia here.

Day tours – I do go for a day trips when I travel as often they are the most convenient way to see the place that saves you time and money.

I most often use Get Your Guide that offers a variety of tours all over the world. Click here to check all the best tours you can take during your travels!

Offline maps – For years I’ve been using MAPS.ME app and I can’t recommend it enough!

It’s free, works offline perfectly fine and saved me many times. You can easily transfer Google Maps with all the bookmarks to maps.me and use them offline wherever you are.

Click here to download it to your phone before your next trip!

Yay! I booked a flight and room yesterday – I’m going for 10 days in May.
Seeing your brilliant photos again confirms I made the right decision to
choose Ljubljana over Budapest or Porto, both on my ‘bucket list’ too.

That’s awesome! I’m sure you’re going to love it! 10 days is a lot, you can actually visit the whole country in that time and Ljubljana might be a perfect base for that, located right in the middle! :)
