Croatia: Dubrovnik in one day

(Last Updated On: 05/02/2023)

When planning my Balkan trip I knew I have to somehow make it to Dubrovnik as well, even if it means seeing Dubrovnik in one day only. After all this is one of the best places to visit in Croatia.

Everyone who has visited this Croatian city kept telling me how incredibly beautiful it is, with narrow streets, shining pavements, many historical building to visit and wonderful city wall surrounding the old town. The list of things to do in Dubrovnik is just endless! The place seemed to be too pretty to be true, all the Dubrovnik pictures I’ve seen were proving it and I simply couldn’t miss this city!

Fortunately it was easy to spend one day in Dubrovnik on my way from to Bosnia. It literally is in the middle of the way between Kotor and Mostar and one day in Dubrovnik seemed like a perfect opportunity to explore this Pearl of Adriatic as the city is often called.

If you arrive to Dubrovnik from the south, like I did, you’ll be amazed by the breathtaking view of the old town with red roofs and the clear blue sea… I don’t know how the drivers can stay focused when they drive with such a view in front of them…

Arriving to Dubrovnik

The bus station is located quite far away from the old town but there’re frequent city buses connecting these two places. The city bus seems to be always full with tourists arriving to Dubrovnik by bus or cruise ships (that disembark nearby) so there’s no way you won’t know when to leave the bus.

The entrance to the old town leads through the magnificent Pile Gate that takes you straight to the main street of Dubrovnik’s old town – The Stradun or Placa. It’s long, it’s shining, it’s full of (delicious) ice cream shops or places with souvenirs.

But it’s also full of people at sometimes you just have to push your way through that kind of spoils the whole experience. Still it’s so beautiful and it’s a perfect place for a start your one day in Dubrovnik.

How to see Dubrovnik in one day

Once you walk this 300 meters long street you’ll find yourself surrounded by a high class monuments: Mediterranean palaces, baroque churches and Orlando Column that is a popular meeting point.

Only few steps further, through the city walls, is the small harbor of Dubrovnik with lots of tourist boats that can take you for the sightseeing tours. In the background you can notice some more big cruise ships that took people almost to the heart of the old town.

The narrow streets of the old town with its steep stairs lead you to the completely different world. Once you leave the main trails you find yourself walking alone, passing by local people every now and then.

The laundry unfurl between houses, cats lay in the afternoon sun and suddenly the real atmosphere of old Dubrovnik starts to fill you in.

But the highlight of your stay would be walking the city walls – one of the best photography locations in Dubrovnik!

During the Balkans War in 90s Dubrovnik was badly damaged, the siege of the city lasted for seven months. 56% of the buildings in the old town were hit by one of 650 bullets.

Now, when you visit Croatia, you can’t see much of the war remainders. Instead you can enjoy an UNESCO World’s Heritage Site with all its beauty.

I've been to Dubrovnik a few years ago, loved it! Even with all the tourists it's still a very charming place. I'm a big fan of Croatia anyway. :D

I was only to Zagreb ten years ago and now in Dubrovnik so I can't say much but Croatia seems like a really decent country!
