Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein – the most boring country I’ve ever been to

(Last Updated On: )

What comes to your mind when you hear the name “Liechtenstein”? Probably not much as the country is so tiny and squeezed in between the bigger and more known neighbors – Switzerland and Austria. Not many people know about Liechtenstein and even less visit it. To be honest I can’t blame them – I’ve been there twice so far and I couldn’t really find anything exceptional to even like the place. It lacked the soul and the vibe and that made it just another random destination and I don’t think I will visit it again anytime soon (or at all). But why did I find Liechtenstein so boring?

This part of the world offers breathtaking views for sure! Harsh Alp mountains with snow covered peaks, green fields with cows and sheep jangling with the little bells on their necks, tall and slim church towers located in the valleys. The scenery looks like from the postcard or Milka advertisement and sometimes it’s just too kitschy to be true. And I guess mountainous villages in Liechtenstein must look the same and can make a perfect getaway to relax. But two main cities, Vaduz (the capital) and Schaan (the biggest town), are nothing special and when I’m using the word “nice” to describe them it’s still an exaggerating.

Liechtenstein is a really small country you can’t even see it properly on the map. It was founded in 814 and occupies the area of only 160 square kilometers (I managed to walk half of the country, no matter how insane that sounds) with around 35.000 inhabitants. The official language is German, they use both Euro and Swiss Franks and have the highest gross domestic product per person in the world and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world (1,5%). I guess when you live in the country like this you must know half of the population.

When I first got to visit Liechtenstein it was the gloomy October day few years ago and I was going back home from visiting a friend in Zurich. Since the country was on my way anyway I’ve decide to stop for few hours to see what it has to offer (and to be able to say I was in one of the quirkiest countries in Europe). The mountains were already partly covered with snow, the trees around had pretty autumn colors and the nature didn’t look that bad (but it looked even better in Switzerland or Austria…). The cities however were just simply random and boring. Both Schaan and Vaduz had maybe one or two buildings that looked fair enough to interest me. The main pedestrian street of the capital, Staedtle, had only overpriced restaurants, souvenir shops and few museums (the Post Museum was pretty ok). The castle overlooking the city – the official residence of the Prince of Liechtentein – was nice but so very small (like the whole country)!

My favorite place in the whole country was the Prince vineyard, unobtrusively located next to the main street. It’s small (of course!) but it looked really pretty with October leaves full of picturesque raindrops and grapes ready to be picked up. This place also offers a nice view of the Vaduz Castle, with pretty mountains in the background. I started my second visit it Liechtenstein from the vineyard as I remembered it as the best place in the whole country but since it was mid March and there were only bare shrubs around it wasn’t that great anymore. But the view was still good!

It is possible to climb to the Castle – the well marked path leading there from the Staedtle street. It’s a short hike, next to the private houses, with boards every few steps telling about the history of the country and its economy and political situation. These weren’t there during my first visit and it was really interesting to learn about this quirky country that I literally knew nothing about, only the very basic facts. Halfway to the Castle there’s a nice viewing platform that offers really good views over half of Liechtenstein, Switzerland and surrounding mountains. You can see the vineyard, the FC Vaduz stadium, the Rhine river that also serves as a border between these two countries and the Swiss city Buchs. Unfortunately it is not possible to visit the Castle but it’s still worth to take the hike up, just for the view. It might be a highlight when you visit Liechtenstein

Even if I’m obviously not a fan of this tiny country I still think it’s worth to visit Liechtenstein. Each time when I was in Liechtenstein there were only few tourists around and that gave me an impression of the off the beaten path destination. The cities are boring and don’t offer much but there still are few interesting places, such as the Post Museum (apparently stamps from Liechtenstein are a really big thing and because they’re unique they make the best souvenir), the vineyards or the walk to the Castle. During my second visit the Staedtle street was also full of various contemporary art pieces – they were there as a part of the Art Museum exhibition and they were not bad at all. I’m also sure that Liechtenstein offers a great hiking opportunities and if for some reason I end up there again that’s what I’ll focus on!

You say it’s the most boring country in the world (despite the fact you didn’t go hiking in the mountains)…but then you reccomend people to go. Make your mind up. Doesn’t seem like you did all the things you should have done there to get the most out of the country…whatsoever. Just glazed over the surface. And twice, bizzarely. Maybe 3rd time lucky.

maybe 3rd time luck, who knows. What I wrote here is my opinion only (that’s what blogs are for after all) and yes, even if I found it boring I still recommend people to go there and see for their own, maybe they will have different impressions than me. We can’t like all the places in the world and me and Liechtenstein just didn’t click.

Yeah, because the majority of people are into hiking. smh If you have hike in order for you to enjoy Liechtenstein then I would concur with her assessment.

You need a proper guide for visits to Liechtenstein! Unfortunately the country is too small to train proper guides ;)
I am from Liechtenstein and I absolutely understand how you can find it boring looking for all the things you’d see in a city. What makes Liechtenstein special are the many many fun facts about it, its unique history and its ‘peculiar’ inhabitants – things you only get transmitted by a well-informed local!

I agree with you! Too bad Liechtenstein isn’t so big on tourism (yet), I’m sure a lot of people (including me) don’t appreciate the country properly. But I’m ready to return to Liechtenstein and give it another chance again!

I visited Liechtenstein one spring afternoon after visiting a friend who lives near Sargans in Switzerland. I agree, not much interesting to do. But if you are passing through and there is good weather, it is definitely worth taking a quick hike up to the Wildschloss, the ruins of a small castle up on the mountain behind Vaduz. Some great views without many people around.

I might have kept hiking up the mountain if I had more time to spare.

I agree, it’s worth stoping by when you’re in the area but not taking the whole trip just for Liechtenstein. But I wouldn’t mind returning there for some hiking around!

Unfortunately I didn’t have much contact with people but those I had were kind and polite and seemed to be happy but still a little bit reserved so I couldn’t judge well.

I can’t agree that Liechtenstein is the most boring country. I spent my holidays there this year and it was great. However I was hiking most of the time and that is whole point of going there. If you want to be Chinese day tripper from Switzerland its your choice but that kind of visiting is pointless. I was there in August and spend 8 nights. I did Fursten Gina Weg trail (from Malbun via Pfalzehutte) one day, did Gaflai-Furstensteig – Garselikopf-Gafadurahutee-Planken another day. I was in the country during National Day (15th August) with concerts, free food and drink at the castle (at lunch time) and fireworks display (although it rained during fireworks unfortunately).
I also got free bike from Velopoint (Vaduz post) and cycled entire western border from top at Austrian border to Balzers. I have also been to Triesenberg with hike Walser Weg (first part of it) and Steg (and loved both). I have also visited National Museum, Post Museum and Treasure Chamber in Vaduz and did castle walk and walk around Mittledorf (old, vineyard area of capital). I have also been to open pool in Muhleholz (between Vaduz and Schann). One day I spent in Swiss National Park and Zernez in Switzerland (got there by train so treated Liechtenstein as base).
In general I found country quite lovely with amazing views wherever you are, people very friendly, bus service excellent and good although expensive food. Country in general is very, very expensive but maintains high standards. Schaan is preety boring and I didn’t spend any long time there (just walked once in the evening), Vaduz as for European capital is very small and not busy at all so a few hours will be enough if you want to visit a couple of museums and walk around (even less time if you don’t want that). I wish I had more time to do a few more hikes and see a couple of more places.
My advice is simply – there is no point to go to Liechtenstein if you don’t go to the mountains (unless you do day trip to Vaduz from Switzerland and you only want to tick the box ‘I have been there’). However if you like hiking you will be rewarded with spectacular views. Country is very quiet and not busy so if you like peace and high standards it’s great. Nightlife is virtually nonexistent so for drinking sessions you are better of flying to Mallorca and sharing square mile of beach with thousands of people. I will come to back to Liechtenstein at some time in the future and do a few more hiking trails (the whole country has 400 km of marked paths). I recommend hiking map 1:25000 Wanderkarte Furstentum Liechtensetin (by Swisstopo). Liechtenstein can also be used as base to visit Santis Mountain and Chur in Switzerland or some parts of western Austria.
    Thanks for reading

well, now, after visiting Moldova, I’m not so sure about Liechtenstein being the most boring but it’s still not very high in my rankings. I might give it another chance one day. Thank you for your recommendations, hopefully I will be able to use those!

I agree that there is not much to do there (especially since I am NOT much for hiking), but, strangely, it being boring is EXACTLY why I liked it. I think it’s a good thing to have a place to just relax and be away from the tourists, yet still have the modern conveniences, beautiful mountain views, and the uniqueness of being in a place that the vast majority of Americans could never locate on a map (I am American). I probably wouldn’t plan a trip through Liechtenstein again, but if I’m near there and want a rest from the road for a day or two, I would happily visit again.

The thing about visiting Liechtenstein IS to get there via those neighboring countries (you cannot fly or sail there very easily)….and while in Switzerland and particularly if in Zurich why not take a train and spend a day there. I have visited L. twice and it is one of my 75 countries at the time of writing. Most of them were not as tidy! I didn’t notice L. being boring, for we may have different expectations! More boring to me was an extended wait at Corsica to get a ferry connection to Sardinia, and both islands actually end up boring, while others might give anything to visit there.

I’ve been to Liechtenstein twice and well, this is not the most exciting place ever but not every place needs to be exciting (as you’ve mentioned, those Mediterranean islands also can be boring). But I’m still glad I went there and saw the place myself.

Its not about visiting, its about living there.
Up to 100.000 per year you do not pay any tax, because the prince of Liechtenstein is very rich.
The income is high and the and you will receive a pension for sure when you are old.
The Liechtensteinische Landesbank will be interested in you, if you have at least 1.000.000 Euro.
They await your message year by year if you are still alive. If you do not tell them the money will belong to them.
And they are damn good in advising how to avoid tax. Not long ago a specialist for this Dr. Dr. Batliner died here.
Hanussen has lived here and I think you should read the story about him.
The Hells Angels have been very active in Liechtenstein too.
This is a place which looks very quite and nice (like at the end of The Witcher 3).
But here are demons in many places.
I love this place and lived here unofficially for nearly one year.
Because you are a polish girl maybe you also should read the story about the knight of Liechtenstein.
He is also in old films about the crusaders in Malbork.
We are living in a very interesting time with Armageddon right in front of us.
Beside, the polish people are impressing me, I like to be there.

I was, and I found it more interesting than Liechtenstein. Better views, a prettier town, and a more vibrant atmosphere. But, as always, these opinions are very subjective.
